Marketing managers use business intelligence, industry trend analysis, and market research to identify business opportunities and generate interest in products or services.
Marketing managers spend a lot of their time collecting and analyzing data. They perform competitive analysis to identify gaps or advantages in their products as compared to competitors, and may perform research to learn more about the needs of their target audience.
In some organizations, marketing managers are also in charge of advertising and promotion. In these instances, they have to have a deep understanding of their potential customer base to create advertisements that generates sales.
Most marketing managers work very closely with product and sales teams, so they can understand the product, pass on consumer research, and work in tandem with sales managers.
Work Environment and Schedule
Marketing managers spend most of their time in an office, though frequent travel may be required for some positions (especially if working for an advertising agency, who may have clients all over the country or even the world).
This can be a very stressful occupation, especially when deadlines are approaching. Very long hours may be required, and marketing managers often need to be available twenty-four hours a day. Working 50 hours a week or more is not uncommon for people in this profession.
How to Become a Marketing Manager
Most employers require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree for marketing manager positions, though in some situations a master’s degree is preferred. While a degree in marketing, business, or finance can be helpful, marketing managers come from many different academic backgrounds.
If you want to become a marketing manager, then finding an entry-level marketing position should be your first step. Normally, you will have to work for at least a few years as part of a marketing team before you will be considered for a job as a manager.
